JUNNA’S STORY
UNTS UNTS UNTS / FIDDLE FIDDLE FIDDLE
Junna was founded by musicians Juha Seppänen and Anna Haaraoja in 2019. Initially starting out as a playful experiment to combine traditional Finnish melodies and lyrics with different genres of electronic music, the two soon realised that they had discovered something special.
With the release of the synthwave-inspired EP, Folk.wav (2020), Junna appeared as a fresh and welcome addition to the local folk scene, with their single Et sinä huomannu soon gaining traction. Their first album Hankalempi followed in 2022, and was noted for being daring and unique in its combination of genres – trance, hardstyle and drum ‘n’ bass among others.
In 2023, Junna performed across Finland at events such as Qstock, Taikasaari, Folklandia and Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. In 2024 Junna ventured outside Finland and played their first show abroad in Bourges, France. Eager to collaborate with other artists, Junna’s live show is occasionally complemented by guest singer Paula Raitanen and folk dance artists Mitja Pilke and Eveliina Pilke. Currently they are in Oulu, the European Capital of Culture 2026, working on their second album, where the union of folk and electronic music will be even more jubilant.
The portmanteau, Junna, represents the coming together of two worlds; the traditional and the modern. Enthralled with all things folk, Anna is a classically trained soprano, violinist and music pedagogue who is most often responsible for Junna’s lyrics and melodies.
Juha has honed his skills as a music producer since early adolescence, which is evident throughout Junna’s discography. He is responsible for synths, beats and production, as well as singing alongside Anna and entertaining audiences with his lively stage presence.
Overseeing the entire record-making process from songwriting to mixing and mastering, Juha and Anna have a clear vision for Junna, and ambitions to make their powerhouse duo known far and wide. They aspire to respect the folk tradition of their homeland, while bringing listeners something original and new to dance to – and most importantly, not forgetting to have fun while doing so!
